The extraordinary 18,000 deeded acre Agua Negra is the pearl of the Pecos. This highly productive ranch has numerous unique water features, beautiful New Mexico scenery and a diversified ranch infrastructure. This great river ranch is located at Santa Rosa along the west bank of the Pecos River. Santa Rosa is the Guadalupe County Seat and is a thriving interstate (I-40) and tourist community. Santa Rosa is experiencing growth, has built a new middle school, is building a new hospital and expanding the state game and fish hatchery. All of this new development is adjacent and nearby the Agua Negra’s northern boundaries. US Highway 54 fronts much of the Agua Negra’s north boundary providing great access.
Topography of the Agua Negra is balance with open grama grass lands blending to piñon and juniper woodlands comprised of colorful sandstone mesas, hills, breaks and canyon lands. Pintada Arroya enters the ranch northwest boundary as a dry arroyo, becoming live water charged by seeps and Agua Negra Springs. There after the arroyo is known as Agua Negra Creek which traverses the ranch west to east draining into the Pecos River. The Pecos River fronts the east river pasture for approximately ¾ mile and has towering red sandstone bluffs and mesas overlooking the winding river frontage.
The northern ranch boundary of the Rock Lake pasture is adjacent to the New Mexico Game and Fish Hatchery. Rock Lake pasture contains two unique private fresh water Blue Holes. “Rock Lake” Blue Hole is 500 ft. deep. The Blue Hole “Swan Lake” is 60 feet deep. Both are fed from artesian geothermal vents. Rock Lake has rare fresh water sponges and both lakes have Bass fishing. These lakes have crystal clear fresh water and produce approximately 6,000 gallons of water per minute. The excess water is utilized by the adjacent fish hatchery. Agua Negra has retained all livestock and recreational water rights. The Agua Negra Blue Holes are known throughout the country as an inland divers destination with paid divers scheduling excursions year round.
The land areas surrounding the Agua Negra Creek and the Blue Holes is comprised of approximately 700 acres of sub irrigated meadows. The salt cedars infestation, common to all of New Mexico's water ways, have been sprayed and are now being cleared. Native Cottonwood trees are sprinkled along Agua Negra Creek and the Pecos is a Bosque of the magnificent Cottonwoods.
Additional water features include a irrigation well with 16” casing and clear water at 90 feet. Associated with the well are 114.3 acre feet of water rights. The well is located near the west boundary south of Agua Negra Creek. Associated with Agua Negra Creek is the West Puerte de Luna Diversion ditch together with 18 acre feet of water rights from this source.
Throughout the ranch are numerous man made earth tanks and many natural playa lakes which fill during the summer monsoons. Additional water sources include ten wells, four of which have electric power and submersible pumps. Also available to the ranch is municipal water with a 2 inch water line available for hookup at the northern extension of the ranch boundary.
Agua Negra has the regions most phenomenal water resources which result in an unusual diversified wildlife habitat. One can fish for bass in the Blue Holes or catfish along the Pecos. Water fowl, many mammals and colorful wild birds thrive throughout these riparian areas. The many wooded canyons, breaks, mesas and hills provide excellent cover for mule deer and quail while the open grass lands provide excellent pronghorn antelope habitat.
Nestled along the banks of Agua Negra Creek is the Agua Negra headquarters. It is access by the private Agua Negra Creek Ranch Road east off US Highway 54 or south from the north boundary by county road. The county maintains the road to the Agua Negra headquarters bridge crossing and eastward to the Pecos River. Headquarters is comprised of the residence, numerous dwellings, barns, equestrienne and cattle facilities. The main residence is one of the original Butterfield Stage Stops and is designed in the classic territorial u-shape with covered veranda. Complementing these facilities is a large round pen, mare motel, one large and one small horse barn.
