    Bar X C
Bar X C Ranch is a huge expanse of southwestern New Mexico’s most prolific mountain rangeland. It is located in Sierra County adjacent to the vast Gila National Forest within the Mimbres Mountains along the eastern slope of the Black Range. Native Americans, the Mimbres and Solano Indians, were first to inhabit this pristine wilderness. During the territorial years this was within the Apache stronghold. Notable chiefs, such as Geronimo, Victorio and Apache Kid, fought against the tide of westward settlement.

Indian wars and lawlessness caused companies of soldiers and Calvary to be stationed at the nearby mining ghost town of Lake Valley. Area mining and company payrolls generated settlement and local wealth attracting outlaws and increased harassment from Indian Warriors. The Kingston Gang, Farmington Gang, Black Jack Ketchum and Billy the Kid were a few of the notorious visitors to the area.

The territorial County Seat at Hillsboro gained national attention during the range wars trial of 1899. The trial involved a conspiracy of prominent ranches and politicians accused of foul play in the disappearance of Col. Fountain and his young son. Amid this historical theater is the Bar X C Ranch.

Bar X C Ranch is seventy miles north of Las Cruces/El Paso and two hundred twenty miles southwest of Albuquerque. Road access to the ranch can be made from Interstate 10 at Deming or off Interstate 25 at Hatch and/or Truth or Consequences, N.M. to Lake Valley. These paved roadways are marked as scenic backcountry travel routes that track the historic Geronimo Trail. Driving to the ranch is hassle-free.

Bar X C Ranch controls a huge expanse of over 27,000 acres of pristine native New Mexico rangeland and is adjacent to the enchanting Gila National Forest. Imagine that with your acquisition of the Bar X C Ranch you will have unlimited access to the vast and beautiful world-famous Gila National Forest. This is one of Americas most sought after wilderness regions.

The acreage of the Bar X C Ranch is comprised of 11,070 deeded acres, more or less, together with 11,060 New Mexico State lease acres and approximately 5,000 federal BLM acres. Incredible is that vehicle access and trespass is controlled through most of the ranch.

Bar X C Ranch and the surrounding area are mountainous. Elevation of the ranch ranges from 5,500 feet to 7,000 feet. Many notable peaks are within the ranch boundary and the vistas are incredible. Topography consists of grassy hills blending to piñon pine and juniper cloaked mountains giving way to gently sloping valleys and rugged rocky canyons. This topography creates a vast watershed draining across the ranch. Most all canyons are wet with many seeps, good springs and creeks. Vegetation in the bottomlands and riparian areas include stately cottonwoods, huge oaks, massive alligator junipers, willows and walnut trees. The ranch, with many creeks, springs, shallow wells and no pipelines to maintain, has excellent water distribution.

Bar X C Ranch’s southern location and mild climate is semi-arid characteristic of the merging Chihauhan desert evidenced by the occasional cactus and yucca. Average annual precipitation is approximately fourteen inches. Thunderous midsummer storms develop providing most of the annual precipitation. The growing season is approximately one hundred and ninety days. Vegetation flourishes.

Notable is the pleasant southern climate where year-round use is a given. Summertime heat is never extreme and year-round temperatures are comfortable. Winters are not severe and snowfall is a welcomed event. Plentiful sunshine and clear starlit night skies are expected. Sunrise and sunset are magical times with a symphony of colors and sounds.

Bar X C Ranch offers land use alternatives not typical of ordinary ranches. The mountainous high desert region is utilized yearlong. Historic land use is livestock grazing and hunting complimented with trail riding, archeological exploration and the easy relaxing cowboy lifestyle. The infrastructure is designed to support this cast of activities.

Seasonal big game hunting is a thriving regional industry and the theme of the ranch. Location of Bar X C Ranch is within Hunt Unit 21A. The gifts of this resourceful land are magnified by plentiful surface water and an abundant wildlife community. It is no wonder that the Native Americans chose this extraordinary refuge to succeed.

Huge native desert mule deer have drawn decades of hunters to the ranch seeking a trophy opportunity. Rivaling the deer herds are the successful and generous coveys of Gambels, Blues and Mearns quail populations. Other successful big game animals include elk, turkey, bear and the stealthy javalina and mountain lion.

Complementing this bounty of wildlife are two newly constructed and exclusively private Class A Game Parks. Within the larger sprawling 1,500-acre park are privately owned trophy elk and desert mule deer. There is a smaller, 160-acre park is designed as a breeding pen. Construction of the incomparable game fencing is 8-feet in high steel pipe post and wire promising the confinement of the trophies within.

Explorers will get a taste of the old west while enjoying intense scenic beauty. Favorite haunts will be found among the traces of Apache trails, stage lines, cowboy hideaways and miners camps.
