The Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge Residence and Art Studio is comprised of ten acres located adjacent to the Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge six miles northeast of Roswell, New Mexico. This 40 acre site is at the end of the road bordered by BLM land, private land; all next to the wildlife refuge. It is a sanctuary for the artist, birdwatcher, and naturalist desiring protected views and the scenic beauty of the vast Pecos River Valley and Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
The topography is open grassland with great views of Bitter Lakes and the Red Bluffs of the Pecos River. Native birds, raptors, waterfowl, and many migratory birds will captivate the observer while presenting endless amazing aerial displays. The vast horizon gives way to magnificent summer thunderstorms and beautiful desert winter snowstorms. Overall, you’ll experience a mild seducing climate inviting year round outdoor activities.
Capturing the lure of the outdoors is the simple functional residence and studio designed by Kenneth W. Dabbs, Architect, Golden Colorado. There is 968 square feet of living space designed as a one bedroom and one bath house together with 688 square feet of studio space and a 300 square feet covered porch. Construction is concrete slab flooring with wood frame and Permaflex stucco exterior. The house and studio have 10 foot ceilings throughout and large north view slider windows.
