The Datil Well Ranch is located at Datil, New Mexico. This is the west-central New Mexico "hot spot". Catron County is one of the nations largest and most sparsely populated counties. This is a mountainous land where cattle and elk are in the majority. A pickup is the vehicle of
choice and boots are the most common footwear.
Datil Well Ranch is adjacent to and south-west of the Village of Datil. The property has approximately two miles of paved road frontage. Access is available at the Datil Campground Road, Forest Road No. 66 and by private road. Access roads are gravel based.
Datil Well Ranch consists of 320 deeded acres, more or less, and has 500 acres of federal Bureau of Land Management lease acres, totaling 820 acres.

The Datil Well Ranch is a scenic recreational ranch. Improvements include a shallow domestic well equipped with an electric submersible pump and perimeter fencing. Buried telephone lines are available to the property as is overhead electric service.
Proximity of the ranch is adjacent to the Village of Datil and the BLM Datil Well Campground. The BLM land is developed with hiking trails and scenic lookouts.
The ranch has a federal grazing permit to approximately 500 acres of BLM rangeland. This federal acreage is adjacent to the deeded acreage. South and adjoining the deeded acreage is New Mexico State lease lands. West and adjoining the property is the Homestead Rural Subdivision.
Topography of the ranch is mountainous and rocky with a large scenic and grassy meadow bottomland. Ponderosa pine, pinon, juniper and oakbrush grow within the ranch boundary. Native grass, sagebrush and yucca are also common.
Climate of the ranch and area is semi-arid. Annual precipitation is approximately thirteen inches. Elevation of the ranch ranges from 7,400 feet to 7,696 feet. Wildlife is abundant in the region. Frequent sightings of mule deer, elk, turkey and occasional bear and lion occur.
Datil Well Ranch is along the historic Magdalena Livestock Driveway. Adjacent to the ranch is the Datil Well Watering and Campground. This is one of fifteen former water wells that were spaced at ten mile intervals. The driveway is also known as the "Hoof Highway". The peak year of the "Hoof Highway" was 1919 with 21,600 head of cattle and 150,000 sheep
passing over the trail.
