Foster Ranch is a privately owned mountainous expanse of western New Mexico's most prolific wildlife habitat. Located on the eastern slope of the 10,229-foot Alegres Mountain is the unexpected 5,094±-acre Foster Ranch. This Catron County getaway is secluded yet easily accessed south off U. S. Highway 380 from either Quemado or Datil. All routes to the ranch are county-maintained, all-weather gravel roads. Foster Ranch controls all vehicle access.
The ranch is comprised of 4,254 deeded acres together with 840 acres of New Mexico State lease land. The ranch was developed with a keen awareness of the multiple land use of wildlife habitat, livestock grazing, recreation and habitation.
Upon entry of the ranch, you will discover the manager's residence which is an attractive 3,400-square foot, four bedroom, two and one-half bath headquarters house. The sprawling ranch house is in excellent condition and in conformity with the scenic surroundings. Nearby are the barns, corrals and sheds all in excellent condition.
New to the ranch is a 2,200-square foot, four-bedroom, four-bath pine log lodge. This completely furnished lodge has all the amenities… huge wood burning fireplace and rock mantle, satellite TV, telephone, covered porch and a view shed overlooking food plots and woodlands that ooze with massive elk and the elusive mule deer.
Topography is diversified and beautifully landscaped with grassy meadows, rolling piñon and juniper slopes and upper elevations with ponderosa pine. Red Hill is the focal point of the ranch and is within the shadow of Alegre Mountain.
These are the uplands that the giant elk appear from and that trophy deer scramble down from under the cover of oak and wooded canyonlands. Habitat improvement has benefited the wildlife with the clearing of approximately 200-acre fields that are seasonally planted in millet, alfalfa and rye grass. By seasons end these feed plots will have been grazed by huge herds of elk. Imagine waking to the sound of ten to twenty bull elks bugling in the early morning hours of September through October.
This secluded ranch is in the prime free-chase hunt area Unit 15. Elk are king of the mountain in the rangelands and 350 class bulls are the rule here rather than the exception.
Predator and prey thrive in this rich expanded habitat. Black bear, mountain lion and javalina are occasionally sighted. Many birds also thrive throughout the ranch and flock the fields of millet. Opportunities for wildlife observation or primitive big game hunting are exceptional.
Key to this wildlife habitat is the outstanding water development of springs, wells and earthen tanks. Access to the waterings, improvements and uplands is enhanced by a newly designed road, use of four-wheelers and horses.
Included in this sale of the ranch will be all equipment and lodge furnishings. The equipment includes a Case International 4210, four-wheel drive farm tractor, disk, section hare, 10-foot shredder, seed broadcaster, 12-foot brush rake and a D6D Caterpillar bulldozer.
If you are interested in a unique hunting, wildlife habitat, recreation, western adventure and one of New Mexico's best kept secrets then come see the Foster Ranch and end your search!
