McDaniel Pajarita Ranch is located at the end of the road. This is an area where the world appears to top out. The ranch adjoins the Pajarita Flats of the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation and adjoins the Lincoln National Forest. Vegetation of the area and ranch is predominantly piñon, juniper, oak and mountain mahogany with occasional ponderosa pine. Approximately two-thirds of the private land is a grassland with a mix of piñon and juniper. Topography of these range sites is gently sloping to mountainous along the north and east. The forest lands are predominantly rugged piñon and juniper hills. Numerous canyons traverse the ranch. Elevations range from 6,600 feet to 7,000 feet.
Notable is the mild semi-arid southern New Mexico climate where year-round use is a given. Summer heat at this elevation is never extreme and year-round temperatures are comfortable. Winters are not severe, however, the welcomed event of snowfall is anticipated several times each season. Thunderous midsummer storms develop providing most of the annual precipitation. The infrastructure of the McDaniel Pajarita Ranch includes perimeter fencing and a domestic/livestock water well at the abandoned headquarters. These playas and resources attract native game and were historical hunting grounds for the Mescalero Apache Indians.
Proximity of the ranch is within the historic territorial Lincoln County. Nearby the ranch is the site where the infamous Mr. Tunstall was ambushed and murdered by the Murphy-Dolan faction during the Lincoln County War.
